Many of my patients and friends who go through chemo end up with a new lease on life, whether they were looking for it or not. There are a lot of times they wipe away a few tears. Here's the thing -- It can be equally tough being a caregiver. Stick with your undying support for those you love going through any tough medical treatment– it has power and authenticity and people need this service.
As doctors, we have a unique opportunity to weave technical information people need and the ability to create space for people to speak their truth in the midst of life-changing circumstances. This is a HUGE gift to them and their family. If everyone providing healthcare could also function as an active listener without judgement, the people receiving care and their caregivers would be much better served.
